Climbing Kilimanjaro is probably one of the most dangerous things you will ever do. Every year, innumerable people are evacuated from the mountain, and approximately 10 deaths are reported. The actual number of deaths might be higher. We understand you have many choices when it comes to Kilimanjaro guide services. But when selecting an operator, your safety should take precedence over any other consideration. Beware of companies that downplay the potential dangers of high-altitude trekking. The main cause of death is altitude sickness. Everyone climbing Mount Kilimanjaro should be familiar with the symptoms of altitude sickness. And everyone climbing Kilimanjaro should choose an operator like Habari Adventure that has the proper safety systems in place. When you choose to climb with us, you are literally entrusting us with your life. That fact is not lost on us. We take your health and safety very seriously. High altitude trekking is inherently risky. It's the nature of being on such a tall, expansive mountain such as Kilimanjaro, situated far away from medical facilities. Total safety can never be guaranteed by anyone. Deaths can and do occur on the mountain. Many companies that operate on Kilimanjaro are not capable of handling life-threatening emergencies. Here at Habari Adventure we have a comprehensive safety system that will ensure your safety.

Safety Awareness

All outdoor activities carry some degree of risk. Hiking is no different. Though hiking is a fun and fulfilling way to see the world, it can also take you to high elevations that your body isn't used to. Our guides are highly experienced in preventing, detecting, and treating altitude sickness because they handle over 1,000 climbers per year. Also they are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR), which means they have the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions. They receive annual training in emergency first aid and can prevent, recognize and treat altitude-related illnesses. Additionally, they can identify and avoid potential hazards such as slippery trails and loose rocks. Each client's health is monitored very closely while on the mountain. Here at Habari Adventure we are confident in our guide's ability to act right in the most unexpected scenarios on Kilimanjaro. We carry oxygen cylinder on all climbs and can administer it to quickly treat climbers with moderate and serious altitude sickness. With Kilimanjaro's routes, it is always possible to descend, and descend quickly. Therefore, oxygen is used strictly to treat a stricken climber, when necessary, in conjunction with descent, to treat those with moderate and severe altitude sickness.Even though the majority of participants on our climbs successfully reach the summit without resorting to oxygen systems, every expedition is supplied with oxygen in case clients need help adapting to the altitude. In additional our staff carries a first aid kit to treat minor scrapes, cuts and blisters.

Altitude effect

The world is vast and varied, but for the vast majority of humanity, the heights are a foreign and unknown realm. A wide-ranging population live below 5,000 feet and have never traveled above 8,000 feet. Chances are, this includes you. But on Kilimanjaro, you will have the chance to experience something truly extraordinary. However, at high altitude the air pressure is lower and thus there are less gases overall. If you are climbing Kilimanjaro, you should be aware of a condition called AcuteMountain Sickness, or AMS. Normally Acute mountain sickness is caused by reduced air pressure and lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. In the first category 4,900 to 11,500 ft, high altitude, AMS and decreased performance is common. In the second category 11,500 to 16,000 ft, very high altitude, AMS and decreased performance are expected. And in extreme altitude 16,000 ft and above, humans can function only for short periods of time, with acclimatization. The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high altitude too quickly rate of ascent. Given enough time, your body will adapt to the decrease in oxygen at a specific altitude. This process is known as acclimatization and generally takes one to three days at any given altitude. Another important consideration is route selection. Many climbers fail to reach the summit due to altitude sickness, often because they choose a route that is too short and does not allow their bodies to acclimatize. To increase your chances of a successful and enjoyable climb, consider a longer route that will give your body the time it needs to adjust to the altitude.A shortage of oxygen leads to a physiological response by our bodies. We compensate by breathing faster and deeper. There are also factors related to AMS such as High Altitude, Fast Rate of Ascent, High Degree of Exertion,Dehydration. With due preparation, the right choice of a tour operator and a climbing route suited to your level, Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the safest climbs in the world!

Health Check

Before the climb, you will fill out a medical clearance form for the crew to assess your general physical condition. When the expedition begins, our guide will constantly monitor your well-being on the climb by watching you and speaking with you. Twice daily, in the morning and evening, they will conduct health checks.Throughout the climb, the guides will keep a medical record for each climber to be able to follow the development of your state. Furthermore, our guides will use the administer the assessment questionnaire to help determine whether you have any symptoms of altitude sickness and the severity. It is important that you be open, active and honest when answering these questions and with your guide overall. If you do not feel well, do not try to pretend you are fine. Do not mask your symptoms and say you feel OK. Only with accurate information can the guide best treat you. Regular health checks can help detect the onset of altitude sickness and prevent its further development. Commonly our guide carries a pulse oximeter, to measures oxygen saturation the oxygen level in your blood and your pulse rate. On Kilimanjaro, oxygen saturations percentages are regularly in the 80's. There are no definitive saturation levels where a client can be declared absolutely safe or at risk. Habari Adventure guides are trained to monitor acclimatization and treat high altitude emergencies. They learn to use our full support network, from the mountain down to the hospital and all the way back home, if needed. We take the safety of our clients and the reputation of our company very seriously, that's why we invest in the best guide training possible. With Habari Adventure, you can rest easy knowing that you are in the hands of experts who have been thoroughly trained for decades to handle any situation that might arise on the mountain. However, when oxygen saturation drops below 80%, we monitor that climber very closely. So, in anything at all Respect the decision made of the guide.

Diamox is the brand name for the generic drug acetazolamide, which is not only used for climbing mountains but also for treating conditions such as glaucoma, sleep apnea, epilepsy, and hypertension. So, it's worth noting that the drug may be doing other things in the body besides increasing pulmonary function. At Habari Adventure, we understand the importance of safety when climbing Kilimanjaro.
